In 1384 I paid a visit to the Zoo at Mashhad. It is situated on the Vakilabad park. It has a large number of different kinds of animals and birds. They were kept in cages and are most carefully looked after.
I first saw the Monkeys. They were of various sizes and colours. They were very funny and amusing. They were playing with the branches of the trees and jumping from one branch to another. Some of them made faces to us. I was delighted with their tricks.
Then I had a look to the birds, there were Pigeons, Parrots, Sparrows. Partridges, and other small birds. They flew about in their cages. Their bright feathers of different colours and sweet notes filled us with delight. They looked very beautiful. Next I saw a tank of green water. In it there were Fish and Waterfowls, such as Cranes, Ducks and Geese.
I had a look to the Lions. They were kept in an open space enclosed with high iron railings, so that they might not escape. One of the Lions was roaming about and roaring aloud. Near the Lions were large cages with Tigers, Leopards and great Cats.
Last of all I saw the Peacocks. They had fine feathers and long necks. Some of them were dancing with their beautiful tails spread out in the shape of fans. They looked very pretty indeed in the evening returned home.
